About Betties360: 

Since 2005, Betties360 has provided students in the Portland community access to outdoor activities and life-skill training for free. Our mission is to inspire confidence, well-being and community in cisgender girls, female-identifying, and non-binary youth through skill-building, non-traditional physical activity, and outdoor adventure. Our primary goal is to deliver a cost-effective way to provide outdoor experiences and life-skill training to under-represented youth while providing the Portland community with opportunities to share valuable outdoor experiences with youth who do not otherwise have access. Through these actions, we hope to empower adolescent youth to be successful and engaged members of their community.

Position: Program Instructor 
Reports to: Betties360 Board of Directors 
Position Type: Part-time, 10 hrs/week
Wage: $16 – 20 per hour, depending on experience 

Summary: The Program Instructor works with the Program Coordinator to deliver curriculum and foster relationships with community partners. They will interact regularly with the Program Coordinator, the board of directors, community partners, and schools. 


  • Work within the schools to recruit girls to join the program at the start of each term
  • Plan weekly class agendas with Program Coordinator 
  • Collaborate with the Program Coordinator to create a curriculum that is relevant to the interests and needs of the Betties students 
  • Prepare each programs’ supplies and gear
  • Meet regularly with Program Coordinator to review schedules and curriculum development
  • Uphold Betties360 Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity standards across the organization. 
  • Meet monthly with the board of directors to understand current program needs and opportunities for growth. 
  • Create a comfortable and inclusive learning space for Betties360 participants. 
  • Teach the Betties360 curriculum and be willing to adapt to different learning situations. 
  • Work as a liaison between the program and the school. 
  • Assist in the planning of the Betties360 annual fundraising event.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.  
  • Build upon the current curriculum to better represent the experience of Betties360 participants. 


  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the outdoors and adventure sports. 
  • Experience working with students from under-resourced schools and communities. 
  • Experience working with middle-school-aged youth (ages 11-14). 
  • Several years of experience working in informal education and/or the non-profit sphere developing programming and curriculum. 
  • Understanding of how to engage and support stakeholders living in communities of color, including immigrant and refugee populations.
  • Experience teaching in informal environments (museum, after-school program, outdoor school, etc). 
  • Experience working between multiple stakeholders while maintaining mission integrity. 
  • Enthusiasm for community building and uplifting the voices of young women, people of color, and femme-identifying folk within the Portland community.  
  • A passion for the mission of Betties360.
  • A willingness to try new things and step outside your comfort zone. 

Desired Qualifications – PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Bi-lingual (fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Arabic)
  • First Aid and CPR certification

My name is Noelle, and my daughter Lilliana is in the Betties360 program. My daughter is new to Roseway Heights Middle School and I learned about this program in a PTA meeting.

I was amazed as Lillian logged into the first class and was able to connect with so many other girls around her age. The instructors walked the girls through movement activities and did check-ins with the group, really allowing them to explore their feelings and work through the heightened anxiety that COVID-19 has caused us this school year.

Initially, I thought it might be difficult for my daughter to find true connection through a Zoom call, but Bettie360 also provides parents and family members the opportunity to join our daughter for outdoor activities. Lilliana and I joined a paddle event with Betties360 and the Columbia Slough Watershed Council. We had a great time, and I was impressed by the safety and security messages employed due to the pandemic.

My husband was also able to join a weekend hiking excursion where the Betties were led by female high school students from Post 58 from Lower Macleay Park to the Pittock Mansion. What an incredible accomplishment and bonding experience for my husband and daughter to have.

I am thankful for the space Betties360 provides and glad that my daughter will be forming friendships during this difficult virtual school year that can continue to grow once we are able to send our children to school again.

Fall 2020 Program Update

So much is happening at Betties360! For the first time ever, we offered both virtual and summer programming. One of our program coordinators, Arcadia Trueheart wrote about what it has been like to deliver on our mission amidst unprecedented circumstances of our time:

“Last year, I could not have imagined Betties360 without frequent trips to the Mazamas rock gym, hikes all over the Pacific Northwest, gathering around shared art projects, feasting on healthy snacks, and sleeping in one big yurt. There is a lot that I could not have imagined a year ago. Like many people, I have been frightened and angered by the reality of living in a pandemic.

Working at Betties360, I have also been nurtured and inspired by the resiliency of the girls, our organization, and the schools and partner organizations we work with. Within a few weeks of schools closing in March, we had shifted our after-school program to be fully virtual. My passion for providing a steady and supportive community for middle school girls only grew with the rupture of human connection and stability in our world. The chance to meet weekly over video calls with the same group we’d been working with all year gave me a sense of continuity and reassurance.

Our relationship as instructors and kids in an after-school setting shifted as we all became humans sharing our experiences in an unprecedented time. Through the video call, we saw into each others’ homes, showed off our pets, introduced younger siblings, and gave little tours of the view from our windows. A sense of closeness and solidarity grew in a way that had not been possible or imagined before. The focus of our work moved from encouraging girls to take healthy adventure risks to forming a space of reflection and refuge from the risks that we were all experiencing just by being alive. Between yoga and dance workouts, drawing exercises, and silly story games, we talked about loneliness, fear, racism, and the unknown. Throughout a changing pandemic, a major social movement for racial justice, giant forest fires, and a tense election season, we have met week-after-week to face this world together.

Because Betties360 had never offered summer classes or run a virtual program before this year, we as an organization have needed to get creative. Kelsey Ellis, our other program coordinator, and I invited guest speakers to teach the girls about local watersheds and native plants and put together a panel of fabulous female-identifying professionals to share stories and information about their careers. To expand our interactions beyond the screen, we sent letters to our girls and made hand deliveries of art supplies, journals, snacks, and fun little surprises.

During the summer we delivered tie-dye materials to all the participants and then tie-dyed t-shirts over a video call. To celebrate the ending of summer, we partnered with the Columbia Slough Watershed to host a free family paddle day for all the Betties families. The girls arrived with their families and each pod was able to experience the Columbia Slough in canoes and kayaks. It was such a joy to see everyone in person after months of video calls and to share a beautiful late-summer afternoon together.

With the beginning of the school year, we have a new group of students from St. Andrew’s Nativity School and are growing our Roseway Heights Middle School group from last year. We continue to meet weekly over video calls and are planning monthly in-person family events, including another paddle on the Columbia Slough, a hike in Forest Park led by high schoolers from Post 58, and an urban bike ride.

What this coming year will hold on a global level is unknown and daunting, but I take great comfort in knowing that Betties360 will be doing everything in our power to respond to the times and continue holding a place of solidarity and friendship for our Betties and their families.”

We are extremely proud and fortunate to have Arcadia and Kelsey, who thoughtfully responded to the complex health, environmental, and socio-political factors affecting our youth this past year.

One of our guiding principles at Betties360 is knowing what brings us together is our relationship with our community and environment. Despite the pandemic and the challenging socio-political climate, our work continues.

Connection and Community during COVID-19

We hope you and those closest to you are safe and healthy as across Oregon and the nation we’ve been asked to stay at home during the coronavirus pandemic. At Betties360, we’ve adjusted our programming so we can continue to serve our youth during this uncertain time. For the last few weeks, our classes have gathered in online video sessions.

The last time we saw our Betties in person was the week of March 11, when we wished them a happy spring break and built excitement about what was in store for their spring term. Unfortunately, with the stay at home order and school closures in place for the remainder of the academic year, we won’t be able to see them in person again anytime soon. Needless to say, this is disappointing for our Betties and for us, as around this time, we’d typically be hosting urban hikes near their schools and planning to reunite our two schools at our year-end camping trip.

Our mission is to inspire confidence, well-being, and community in girls through action sports, outdoor adventure, and life-skills education. Given these unusual circumstances, we’re leaning into the life-skills and community aspects of our mission.
During weekly video meetings, our program staff have led students through conversations about the fear, stress, and anxiety they are facing, as well as exercises to help manage those difficult feelings. Our Betties are so excited to have this structured time to connect! Many of them haven’t had contact with their friends since being in school, and this was an opportunity for them to reconnect. Several Betties have exchanged phone numbers to keep in contact outside of our class time.

We are meeting with our Betties weekly through Google Meet.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our ability to deliver valuable outdoor experiences to our Betties, we are grateful to be able to hold online space with them during this challenging time. We believe that the positive relationships and conversations we’re building within our program make an important impact on each child’s mental and emotional health, and we’re planning to continue meeting virtually at least through the end of the school year.
We’re also bringing the outdoors in as much as possible. As we continue to spend virtual time together each week, our partners at the Audubon Society of Portland and Columbia Slough Watershed Council who typically lead spring excursions with us – usually hiking and/or paddling trips – plan to join us as guest speakers.
We feel very fortunate that at the beginning of this school year, we had the opportunity to take our Betties to Smith Rock, where they rock climbed outside and camped overnight. This would never have been possible without donor support – thank you for making our first fall camping trip happen in October 2019!

Last week, our program staff are preparing care packages filled with healthy snacks, drawing paper, origami, colored pens and pencils, stickers and notes of encouragement to let our Betties know that we’re thinking of them, and give them more tools to care for themselves during their time at home.

Partner Spotlight: Post 58

Post 58 is a group of teenagers from the Portland metro area who engage in outdoor adventures under the guidance of experienced adults. These activities include rock climbing, backpacking, hiking, mountaineering and many other outdoor adventures.  The Post is open to students ages 14-18. Members participate in trips around the Northwest and sometimes to mountain ranges and climbing areas in other states and countries.

We’re excited to partner with Post 58 students on excursions throughout the year. Last year high school students from Post 58 joined our Betties on local hikes and encouraging our participants to continue exploring outdoor adventure sports as they move into high school. In this school year we planned an overnight camping and rock climbing trip with Post 58 at Smith Rock. We look forward to sharing more about that trip in a later blog post!

Our Program Assistant, Arcadia Trueheart, interviewed two Post 58 students (Eliza and Vivian) and two advisers (Maya and Charlie) to learn more about their experiences in the outdoors.

Eliza: is a senior at St. Mary’s High School and a newly elected president of one of the Post58 chapters. She joined her Sophomore year after hearing about Post58 from other girls at her school.

Vivian: is a recent graduate of Cleveland High School and continues to be actively involved with Post58. She spoke with our Betties360 participants about joining Post 58 when they enter high school.

Maya: is a Post58 adviser – one of the many adults who volunteer to organize and lead the trips. She joined for the opportunity to learn outdoor recreation leadership skills and to connect with teenagers in the community.

Charlie: is a Post 58 adviser and participated in Post58 as a high school student and returned to lead Post58’s community outreach initiative.

Why did you join Post 58?

Eliza: I originally joined because I wanted to get outside more, I wasn’t really aware of the community but it has been more beneficial than I had thought originally.

Charlie: It’s a community that kinda hooks you in, it’s a space where people feel comfortable with themselves. Being part of that [youth-adult] relationship and growth is real special and you don’t often find that in [short term] outdoor leader positions, [at the Post] there are relationships that can be cultivated over several years.

Vivian: Definitely the community. It’s such a strong community. I have friends that I never thought would be my friends and I’m very close with them now. Also the Post gives you so many resources to things you might not have. They want you to go on these trips so bad and they want you to see what you’re passionate about because maybe you love mountaineering and you never knew that until you climbed Mt.. Hood. You should see if that’s for you. The Post is really good at making sure that that is accessible to everyone.

Why are outdoor leadership opportunities are so important for teens?

Maya: [In this society] we don’t really have rites of passage so doing outdoor experiences gets you closer to these rites of passages that I think we really crave. I just think having a space where you’re separate from the adults that run your life, where you can talk to your community about anything and everything is so important. [As a teen] I really valued the opportunities to be in a space that was separate from school, separate from my family… to get that kind of removing from your known spaces and especially… where you get to create community with your peers is such a valuable chance to become your own person and develop your identity in a way that you just don’t have access to when you’re just in these spaces that you’ve been in your whole life.

I’m really interested in female-identified trips because I think that women really need that at that time in life to talk about all of these women health issues in a space that feels really safe and nonjudgmental, for me the outdoors is a really good place for that.

Vivian: I’d never done outdoor stuff before so it really opened up a door for me of new passions.The Leadership aspect was really important. It changed my life and how I see problems. I used to be a lot more aggressive and forward but now I feel like I’m a little more versatile with problem solving.

Eliza: The Leadership has been a huge aspect of it, I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to become president or the skills I’ve learned from that in a different atmosphere. I’m a lot more confident interacting with adults and organizing events too.

How do you address safety in the outdoors and getting outside your comfort zone?

Maya: I got my wilderness first aid through the Post and so that made me feel better that that’s a priority is to have advisers certified in these specific ways. We try to keep our community in the community so that we don’t have to hire a guide from somewhere else and so that way you’re still building relationships. You’re going to have a safer trip if the advisers already have long standing relationships with the students so that we can recognize everyone’s needs quickly and have all these certifications under our belt as well.

Vivian: No one’s going to push you into your danger zone. The Post is not about pushing people way outside their comfort zone, making them freak out and hate everything. It’s pushing them to their learning zone and seeing this is what’s possible.

I would encourage parents like if it’s a hike, come with us! That’s totally okay. My mom went to the very first meeting and she has never questioned anything since. She felt so secure in that first meeting when she saw the people who were going on these trips with me.

Charlie: It’s a very safe atmosphere both in the outdoors and in town, in its community, so of things people can do in high school, it seems to be one of the safer things.

What are you most excited about when it comes to partnering with Betties360?

Vivian: I’m so excited to meet them [the Betties360 participants] and just the fact that they have this courage and inspiration to even try it out is just so awesome. I love working with younger kids who are middle school level because they’re just gonna teach me so much also. Especially if they do decide to go in the Post they’re just going to be right off the bat fierce and ready to take some leads on some trips. They’re gonna have these skills to make themselves even more successful.

Eliza: I know that the Post would have been really influential to me if I had started even earlier. I know that it would have been really helpful as you go through middle school which can be a little tumultuous so I’m excited that they [Betties participants] have the opportunity to be out there.

Maya: I think it’s a wonderful transition, especially a program like Betties where you have these specific skills you work on and it’s starting to build that spark or that interest in the outdoors or other activities that women might not be interested in because they might think oh that’s a boy’s sport. I think it’s a really awesome transition into the Post where you do get to be more, you learn those leadership skills, it’s a student-run place, it’s a place for developing and continuing to develop that autonomy and also a space that it is promoting female inclusion and female leadership, I think it’s just a natural flow.

Charlie: It seems to me to be a clear continuation from some of the things you all [Betties] do, talking about pushing one’s comfort zone and engaging in activities that might put you to the test and how to overcome adversity and respond to difficulty wherever it lies. In values and philosophies it’s very similar. I also think now’s the time for women to run the world. So I’m pumped about seeing these future leaders come into our world.

Partner Spotlight: The Mazamas

Betties360 has partnered with the Mazamas through their Youth Outreach Climbing program for the past four years to teach our youth rock climbing at their location in southeast Portland. Mazamas volunteers start by explaining how to get into climbing gear (harnesses & climbing shoes), climbing basics, and belaying. Our students complete three trips to the Mazamas Mountaineering Center during our program. The Mazamas volunteers also have joined us for bouldering days at the Circuit Bouldering Gym NE.

Our Program Assistant, Arcadia Trueheart, interviewed Molly Mosenthal, Youth Programs Coordinator, and Sarah Lydecker, Mazama Volunteer and Adventure WILD Climbing Coordinator, about their outdoor experiences as women and their work teaching rock climbing to our Betties! We hope you’ll take a moment to read what they had to share.

How did you both get involved with outdoor adventure sports?

Molly: For me it started in really young childhood. I grew up in a rural place so I was constantly surrounded by trees and streams and mud and snow and all that fun stuff. You know, as a young child, I would play in the outdoors and that was just my playground and my toys were sticks. But then as I got a bit older into later childhood and teenage years, my relationship with the outdoors shifted a bit more towards work, with stacking wood and shoveling snow and occasionally damaging my father’s tractor while plowing the driveway or tipping the mower tractor over and getting it stuck in the woods. We lived in a pretty remote area and relatively often we would get the car stuck in the mud or snow and have to slog home with whatever gear we had in the car at the time. And so I guess trudging through the snow in my childhood felt more like work, not fun.

The recreation aspect of it didn’t really come for me until I left Vermont, where I grew up, and moved to Colorado and was in Denver, and despite being a “mountain town” as people say, it is pretty far from the mountains and I definitely felt that distance very heavily and I was like, oh my gosh I’m trapped. I really struggled with that for a while in college and felt very trapped by concrete and the plains and the flatness and bareness of it all was really shocking to me. It didn’t feel as safe, or comfortable like I knew.

So that led me to seek out these outdoor adventures and natural spaces for me to be in. Even just going for a short hike and sitting in nature for my mental wellbeing was a huge help for me in those years. So that was my impulse I guess and I realized, I really do enjoy this and it doesn’t have to be work to be outside. It can really just be fun and enjoyable and it helps my mental health significantly. That was the first impulse for me, a seeking to better my own wellbeing and happiness in this world.

Sarah: My experiences have been pretty similar. Both of my parents were geologists but instead of growing up in the snow, we lived in the desert in Texas and a lot of my memories were of being dragged on long road trips to look at rocks. I didn’t really get it or understand what was so cool about these rocks and I would just sit in the car while my parents would load the back of the station wagon with specimens.

I’ve always been an artist and after I finished college, I ended up working in Portland in the art scene and spending a lot of time inside. I found myself getting very mentally cooped up and looking for more inspiration and needing to feel fresh. So I started to go hiking. So I got into the outdoors pretty late. Not pretty late, but it feels like comparatively late. I was in my early twenties when I started going on hikes and I would just go out by myself. Then I encountered this weird thing called snow which I was pretty sure was going to kill me. So I started taking classes with the Mazamas to educate myself about how to, you know, walk in the snow. I found a neat community of people who are into different sports, hiking, community service, hanging out, and just being pretty positive. I’ve really enjoyed the outdoors for what it can give me and for how I can be involved with it and the community.

Has being a woman/female influenced your experience with these activities and the outdoors and the culture around it? 

Molly: I reflect on that one a lot. I guess coming back to growing up and the shift from childhood to adulthood, and how that shifted my relationship with the outdoors and my identity within the outdoors… I guess everyone feels most comfortable where they grew up – in the land and the people and the culture. I think that was very true for me particularly in the way that humans interact with the environment. I was very used to that culture in Vermont. Because it’s so rural you kinda have those ruralisms where it’s like, everyone has this relationship with the outdoors and whether you say, “I’m an outdoorsy person” or not, you just are, and everyone belongs outdoors without question. And then I went to Denver and you could live your whole life without ever hiking through the foothills of the Rockies and living twenty minutes from it. When I was living in the city, and still to this day, it was this Weekend Warrior style of “I live in the city and I live this very indoor city life and then on the weekends I go out into the mountains to recreate and then I go home to the city and go inside until next weekend.”

So there was this very different culture that was a real shock to me, and I struggled, and still do struggle, to acknowledge that I was becoming a part of that culture – I guess sort of feeling like somewhat of a loss of my identity. A big part of that I think was adventuring in groups, and with the culture of outdoor safety, and making everything a really big deal to go on an adventure, like you had to be with a partner or group to go on outdoor pursuits or else it was irresponsible, and that was tough for me. [Being in the outdoors] was a mental health refuge for me so I often wanted to go alone to the outdoors and that’s when I feel most comfortable when I’m responsible for myself and myself only and I feel that sense of independence and freedom. I felt sometimes limited by that in Colorado because of the culture I was surrounded by and because if I just wanted to go drive around on a forest service road and find a nice spot to car camp or hike or something, I didn’t always feel comfortable because I would run into people who said, “You don’t belong here” or said it with their eyes or their body language. And I felt, as a child, that the outdoors were mine to have and then once I was in the city, I felt I was just kind of a city person that didn’t have the rights to those spaces like I used to. I guess I’m talking more about the shift of my identity into being a city dweller rather than being female… I’ll stop rambling now.

Did you feel like when people would look at you like that they were men? 

Molly: I don’t want to draw boxes and make stereotypes, but the memories that I have of feeling uncomfortable in the outdoors in Colorado were definitely often with men that were living in those rural communities, and where I was coming in from Denver as a female, clearly from the front range, you know in my Subaru with a Bernie sticker on it. So I guess I just often felt judged or that I wasn’t welcome as a result of my identity – part of that being female, living in the city, having a more liberal political view than the majority of people in the towns that I was venturing into, etc. I guess it’s hard to isolate parts of your identity when you’re feeling unwelcome.

Sarah: Well I feel very lucky to live in the Northwest where the culture of outdoors is so, seemingly, gender split pretty well, which has been awesome. I did learn how to do my mountain skills in an all women class which the Mazamas currently don’t offer. When I was taking it there was a considerable amount of push back for it and support of it. I’ve noticed with adults learning outdoor skills in these kind of group settings, it feels like a competition. When I was younger and everything felt like a competition I was like that too and couldn’t wait to get up Mt Hood or Rainier. There was definitely some push-back at community events of like, “Oh, you’re in the all girls group, they’re too slow” or “Why would you want to do that?” and sometimes I resented that because I wanted to be seen as strong and confident and other times it was like well, “You’re boring and I don’t like climbing with you because you never listen to me.” I don’t want to make generalizations, some of my best climbing partners are men, some are female.

That being said, I really enjoyed learning in an all-female group. The communication styles are subtly different. The way that a lot do women will defer or question or cry but that’s not seen as a sign of weakness. That was one of the strongest things my leader taught is it’s okay to cry. Sometimes when women get pissed off, you cry. Sometimes I’ll be rock climbing and I’ll freak out and start crying but that’s my stress response and it doesn’t mean I hate rock climbing. It’s just I process my emotions like this and once these tears come out, I’m good to go. But that can be really distressing if you’re not socialized in that way. And so sometimes when I climb with guys, they freak out. I’ve also encountered the rural, what-are-you-doing-here vibes. Like I was driving in Colorado and Montana for awhile and definitely you get a vibe of like, “Why are you here?” “Why are you parked on the side of the road in Wyoming?” I don’t know how much of it is an age thing or a gender thing or just a “This is our small town.” When I grew up in West Texas, it was very much of a, “Here’s our town and our spaces.” And you see this a lot with “This is my trail,” “This is my Montana climbing area,” “You can’t develop the Gorge because I hike Dog Mountain without permits” type thing. And I think there’s a sense of ownership that people have towards their public lands and I don’t know if that’s a gender thing or if that’s an ownership thing. I do notice when I’m hiking with my boyfriend or with other guys, people will come and talk to the men for directions when I’ll have more first aid training or more climbing and hiking experience. But on the positive side, I’ve had people cheer for me and female climbing partners when they see us like climbing up Monkey Face. And I don’t want a participation award for being female but it is neat to be noticed for doing a sport.

Molly: I just started reflecting back on learning rock climbing and spending lots of time skiing back in Colorado, and kind of my whole life skiing and often being the only girl in the group. Many of my regular ski buddies in Colorado were guys, and I definitely recall them pretty often saying things like “Molly, you’re a killer skier for a girl” or “your the only real skier girl I know” And I would think to myself like, “Well that’s not true at all, you just don’t give anyone else a chance because you know me and have skied with me a ton, and have implicit, or maybe sometimes explicit, biases towards girls being good skiers.” But I guess I was somewhat flattered by it and wasn’t feeling attacked personally, so never really questions them as much as I wish I had.

Then coming into a climbing space, I started learning climbing coming into Mazamas. I climbed a bit before, but never fully got into until being constantly around it here in this community. I feel so much more comfortable, with climbing specifically, when I’m with a group of women or female-identifying people. One of the first times I led outside I was with two female friends and I felt so comfortable and I knew I could ask any question I had to ask and clarify anything over and over again. And just walk through everything and feel comfortable expressing that concern. And I didn’t feel there was any competition. Where as when I’ve climbed with guys I’m really close with, I don’t necessarily always feel that security of open communication and support. I sometimes feel there’s a competition element that is hard for me to feel fully at ease in.

What is the history of women within Mazamas? 

Molly: Well, we were founded in 1894 on the summit of Mt Hood. A collective of people who decided to summit Hood together and found a group of those interested in the outdoors and climbing mountains. I believe somewhere around a quarter of that group was female, which was remarkably high considering that it was 1894. so there’s been a long-standing history of female-involvement in Mazamas, definitely more so and kind of ahead of it’s time for much of Mazamas’ early history. Several years ago we had an all-female Basic Climbing Education Program (BCEP) for adults too. We’re not running it now, but one of our BCEP Leaders this year is running an LGBTQ+ specific group, which is great to see some identity-specific communities popping up within Mazamas. So yeah it’s definitely come and gone but I think female involvement and leadership in the Mazamas has been a long-standing aspect of the organization as a whole.

Sarah: I understand there’s a push to have more female climb leaders and recruit more female basic climbing leaders. Which is pretty cool. I know that when I took advanced rock class recently there were like five women in it which was not a large percent and only like one female lecturer out of all the lecturers we had. But this year the [member] gender ratio is like 50/50 and there are so many more women on the leadership and lecturing roles which is really awesome to see. I’ve learned a ton from women. I’ve really appreciated how communicative and willing to mentor the women I’ve met here at Mazamas have been. There are quite a few who are on various committees who have been climbing mountains for longer than I’ve been alive who are just badass and so cool when you hear their stories of going up Denali or going up Mt Hood in January. Or “I’m going to go hike Dog Mountain and I have enough gear on my back to rescue anyone I meet.” There is so much to be learned and it’s really neat to have that knowledge be available.

How did you get involved in Mazamas, what is your current role/connection?

Molly: I came on originally as the Summer Camp Manager for Adventure WILD, which at that time was a partnership program between Mazamas and Friends of Outdoor School. It started under Friends of Outdoor School in 2012 and used to be a fundraiser program for the state-wide Outdoor School program, and then in 2016, Measure 99 passed and guaranteed state funds for the program that it used to support, so then Mazamas took [Adventure WILD] over and then I came on board right around that time which was the first year that it was being fiscally run under Mazamas. So I came on as a temporary employee, I knew essentially nothing about Mazamas beforehand and was relatively new to the Northwest. After that position ended, I came on board as the Youth Programs Coordinator and Summer Camp Manager in 2017 and since have become a lot more involved as a staff member and generally in the community and understanding what makes Mazamas the Mazamas.

Sarah: I took BCEP in 2014 and I’ve taken a few of the other classes and I was encouraged to volunteer as a way to keep my skills up and meet people. I’ve done quite a few Mazama climbs and now I’ve found that I really like volunteering with the youth groups. It’s just really cool to see people try things and get excited. I like that the Mazamas is a large collective lobbying force for environmental and access issues in the Northwest and I think it’s really cool what they can do with their collective power.

What has been your experience of working with the Betties participants? 

Molly: Joy and light in my life! It is such a fun group for me. Some days I’ll come to work and feel busy and stressed all day long and then I’m like, oh, it’s a Betties day! Sometimes it feels like I can’t afford to take three hours away from my desk, and then I go upstairs and the girls come rushing in and their energy is just amazing and they’re just like “We know this space, we got it, we know how to put on our harnesses, we can do this” and they’re just so into it. And immediately all my woes are out the door. It’s been honestly really emotional watching girls get excited about this and feel the sense of ownership of just, “We can come in and this is our space and our place and our sport and we’re doing this and you can’t hold us back.” And it’s just one of the most beautiful things to see for me.

Sarah: I think I like the girls that get really into coaching the other girls more than the star climbers. I love encouraging the girls to climb but when I see someone really get into coaching and they’re like, “No, put your foot there or do that,” that’s really cool. I heard about the Betties when a Mazama climb leader mentioned how she had done some volunteer work with them. I think she led them up St. Helens or South Sister. And she described it as the most awesome, tedious, challenging ordeal that she would not trade anything for. And she was like, “If you can only volunteer for one group, you should go with this one.” That’s really high praise.

What do think that rock climbing specifically gives to middle school girls? 

Sarah: A chance to beat the boys! Honestly, developmentally that’s when you have the strength to weight ratio that you can beat them. But it’s not just that! It’s problem solving, physical challenges…

Molly: I think trust building is really huge too. And just overcoming self-esteem and confidence issues. When you’re up on a climbing wall, especially here in our space, like even just the physical set-up of our space, there are probably fifteen people staring at your back while you do something that is very challenging for you and maybe your first time ever doing it and you have no idea what to expect. So being up on a wall, on display, directly in front of people’s eyes and feeling like, “Wow, people are staring at me and they could be saying all sorts of things” and that’s a really terrifying thought for that age/middle school girls and really any human being in general, but especially that demographic. So I think just being able to get up and realize like, “Oh, I can do this and I can do it well…or maybe I can’t do it well but people are here to support me and I don’t have to always be perfect and do it perfectly for people to support me and love me and be helping me through whatever I’m going through.” For me, that’s a really big part. And the trust building, your life is literally in someone else’s hands.

What is your advice for young women interested in trying out outdoor sports/outdoor recreation for the first time? 

Molly: Don’t feel intimidated. I think especially with outdoor things, usually the biggest fear or deterrent for most is the unknown, especially for personality types who like to know what they’re getting into, which I’m one of them. That’s been a deterrent for me in the past for particular things where I’m like, Oh I’ve never done that before and I have no idea what it’s like so I’m just never going to do it. I find that sometimes I get over it and I do that things and I’m like, Wow that wasn’t hard at all or that was way more approachable than I ever thought it would be. So I think just knowing that there are tons of people out there that would love to teach you or support you in doing something new and there’s no harm in trying it. And maybe you’ll try it and you’ll hate it or you’ll fail at it and that’s great and you’ll stop doing it or you’ll keep doing it and that’s cool too. But just don’t feel that anything is not for you because everything can be for you.

Sarah: You belong there. If you want to be there, you belong there. There is no one image of what an outdoor person looks like and it’s really cool to see how there are more demographics and age groups going outside now.

Molly Mosenthal, Mazamas Youth Programs Coordinator

Mazamas was founded in 1894 on the summit of Mt. Hood. As a nonprofit mountaineering education organization, they promote climbing, responsible recreation, and conservation values through outdoor education, advocacy, and outreach. The Mazamas offer over 700 hikes and 350 climbs annually. A variety of classes and activities are offered for every skill and fitness level and are open to both members and nonmembers. Betties at the Mazamas Learning Rock Climbing

“TAKE!” A girl squeaks, grasping the rock wall with all her might.

“You’ve got this Evelyn!” The woman shouts up, holding tightly onto the belay rope.

“No I don’t, no I don’t! I’m scared!” Evelyn shouts down, clinging to the wall, her eyes squeezed shut. It’s her very first time climbing a rock wall.

“Just three more moves and you’ll be at the top, you’re doing so great!” The belayer calls up.

“You’ve got this Evelyn! We believe in you!” The girls taking a break from climbing shout from below, huge smiles on their faces.

“I do!?” Calls Evelyn, looking down to the crowd, “Oh no! I shouldn’t have looked down!” She exclaims.

“Don’t look down, just look up!”

“Just look up,” she mumbles under her breath, she turns her gaze to the not-too distant ledge, a look of determination replacing her expression of fear. She takes a deep breath and then exclaims, “Climbing!”

“Climb on!” The belayer beams.

In three swift moves Evelyn has climbed up over the ledge and sits there, panting, “Oh hey Mr. Troll!” She smiles at the troll who marks the top of the rock wall, an inside joke amongst the climbers at Mazamas. She then directs her gaze downwards. “Guys… How… How do I get down!?” She panics for a moment, clinging tightly to the rope.

“Don’t worry Evelyn, I got you,” The woman belaying her smiles.

“You do!? Are you sure? It’s so high up! What if I fall?”

“You won’t, I have you. You can climb off the edge if that makes you feel more comfortable and start walking down.”

Evelyn takes a few deep breaths and then swings her foot over the edge, catching it on a rock wall hold, she then pushes herself down so that her hands find another hold before she works up the courage to take her hands off the wall, lean back, and then walk down.

As soon as Evelyn’s feet his the ground, her friend Wren, who has been watching her the entire time runs towards her and wraps her up in one of the tightest hugs I have ever witnessed.

“You did it, I’m so proud of you,” Wren says, taking a moment before letting her go.  Evelyn is shaking from the adrenaline, “Take a few breaths,” Wren says, patting her shoulder, “Feel proud of yourself, you just did that, you’re awesome.”

I smile and capture a couple pictures before turning to the next girl scrambling up a wall, proud to have witnessed another magical Betties moment.

Note: Evelyn and Wren are real girls and this is a real moment that happened during our Mazamas trip their names have been changed in this story.

The Elements of Betties: Meet “D”

D is water. D rolls over rocks and slides down mountainsides, she is fluid and necessary, and thoughtful.

D laughs like a babbling brook, her eyes are full of emotions, and her smile is filled with charm.

D only comes to class occasionally, because sometimes she has to go home to be with her father. They have a close relationship, and Betties tends to happen on the days her father has off. You know her father works immensely hard to take care of her. 

You relate to D because she makes herself relatable.

D is adaptable, she changes easily to conform to the situation. She makes room for everyone. However, she’ll call you out if you say anything unkind to someone she cares about.

If D was a body of water she would be a hot spring, you know this because of the warmth she gives her friends.

D is only 13 years old, yet you’re able to have honest conversations with her. She already has a grasp on how the world works and what it means to be truly kind to people.

D has told you, “I don’t date because I don’t have time for that, I have school work to do.” You laugh.

D is a Betty. She is compassionate, she cares deeply, and she wants to do right by her friends.

D struggles sometimes with the activities, but she never throws tantrums or pouts when she’s having a hard time.

Instead, she laughs when she falls and gets right back up again. She shrugs her shoulders if she doesn’t always do well at an activity, figuring there will be another one she might like better.

D is water.

The Elements of Betties: Meet “M”

M is earth. M is solid, reliable, and kind. M’s eyes sparkle when she’s thought of a new idea. Her feet are always planted firmly on the ground; her head is always in the right place.

M wants to do well in school. M wants to go to college. She tries not to involve herself in drama, because she thinks it distracts from her studies.

M had a hard time making new friends when you met her, she had trust issues, she did not think she could be friends with the other girls because that had hurt her in the past. M stayed with Betties though because she thought it was a great opportunity, and saw the value of being in a space for young women only…Even though she struggled to belong in the group.

This year M is an 8th grader, and you’ve never seen her shine brighter. She has made friends easily, and she has forgiven the people who hurt her in the 6th grade. You see her flit between the different girl cliques at school, and she continues to stay out of the drama and participate in class. You wonder if Betties helped her to forgive her classmates and learn how to make new friends.

M still has a hard time learning to trust new people, and she has an even harder time trusting her body to learn new things. You can’t blame her, you know she was bullied most of her childhood.

M is a Betty. She’s always cautious when she is learning a new activity. You know she’s scared to fall. However, she always pushes through and takes things in stride. You know that at the end of the skateboarding lesson she’ll let go of the wall. You know that at the end of rock climbing she’ll have made her way to the top. You know that during roller-skating she’ll stand up and do one lap around the track. It just takes her time to build confidence.

Maybe someday she’ll have the confidence to immediately let go, but it’s not right now, and that is ok.

M is earth.

The Elements of Betties: Meet “G”

G is fire. G is the most passionate, the most fierce, the most (outwardly) confident young woman I have ever worked with. G is a natural leader. G will stick by you and defend you, so long as you’re a true friend who won’t talk behind her back.

G knows who her true friends are.

G is also one of the most headstrong, most frustrating young woman I have ever worked with.

She sends you on an emotional roller coaster. You want to protect her and shield her from the struggles she faces constantly, you want to tell her it’s ok to still be a child.

You also realize that she is already grown up in so many ways. She had to grow up early to learn how to defend herself. She has far surpassed your capabilities of understanding the world and how it works when you were her age.

G is smart. When she does well in school she does really well. You think G could go to college if she really wanted to; you’re worried she might not.

That’s not what’s modeled for her at home.

G can bring a group together and tear a group apart. She knows how to guide her fellow classmates to focus and respect the person in charge. She also knows she has the power to turn them away from you. She can create order and chaos.

You want G on your side if you’re going to get anything done.

G climbs to the top of the rock wall up the hardest path, learns skateboard tricks with ease, and can pick up any dance routine.

G is a Betty. She does whatever she sets her mind to, she is not scared to try new things, and she is a deeply caring friend. She’s working hard to overcome the challenges life has presented her, sometimes she slips and reacts in a way that is easy for her, but other moments she shines and sparkles, and lets the world know that she means business.

G is fire.

A Story of Resilience and Determination

Zoom! A girl skated by me, her arms stretched out like an eagle, a triumphant smile on her face. To the left of me another girl flipped over her board with her feet, jumped, and landed perfectly balanced on the skateboard. A minute later a third girl skated by and exclaimed, “I love going fast!” Her hijab flapped behind her in the wind created by her speed.

My face hurt from smiling. These young women were doing so well. I couldn’t even tell that twenty minutes ago most of them had never ridden a skateboard.

A moment later I heard a crash and saw a girl tumble. As a person trusted with the safety of these young women, momentary panic set in. I started to move towards the girl to make sure she was okay, but saw all the other young women had jumped off their boards and were running towards her.

“Are you alright? Are you hurt?” they asked, helping her to her feet.

“I’m fine – I just got my wheel caught on a rock,” she exclaimed, dusting herself off.

“Do you want to go sit for a while? Take a break?” The other girls asked, looking genuinely concerned.

“No, let’s go skate over there,” she beamed, hopping back on her board.

I felt my heart swell with pride. In my experience as an educator, I had never seen a group of middle school aged children show such genuine concern for another peer, let alone offer to sacrifice the good time they were having in favor of making sure their friend was alright.

I also felt pride because the girl who had fallen jumped back on her board, completely unafraid to fall again.

Three more young women would fall throughout the class, including myself. Each time every girl would hop off her board, rush over to check on their friend, and then encourage one another to give it another try. While I was impressed with how easily they picked up the sport, I was even more impressed by the support they showed one another.

Middle school is a confusing time—it’s a time when girls begin to process messages spread by the media that women are shallow, careless, and unsupportive of one another. More often than not middle school girls view their peers as people who will tear them down instead of lift them up. What I saw this day impressed me beyond words, because already I was seeing what I was hoping to help create: a space for girls to lift one another up, to support one another, to try new things, and to feel invincible.

I think this is the true magic of Betties360.
